Teacher: 来Sophia can you share with us about 春节?
Sophia: CNY is aka 春节。春节traditions of lighting fireworks and decorating houses red
started out of fear because it was believed that it will fend off the evil creature- nian. During春节it is also customary to give out hong bao (red
packets) containing ya sui qian (money) to unmarried adults and children,
sometimes married couples also give hong bao to their parents. The ya sui qian
is normally prepared in new bills and the amount must be even , it cannot be a
multiple of four as it is a homonym of death. Apart from giving out hong bao,
Chinese also send out春节greetings
while paying New Year’s visit to friends’ or relatives’ houses (This is called
bai nian). Some of the common greetings that we hear are gong xi fa cai (wishing
you a prosperous year) ,xin nian kuai le(happy new year) ,xin xiang shi cheng
(may all of your wishes come true), wan shi ru yi (may 10000 things you do, go
your way), xue ye jin bu (for students, may your studies improve).
sophia.
(he xin nian song)
Hamy could you please share your thoughts
on Lantern festival (yuan xiao jie) ?
Hamy: Yuan Xiao Jie falls on the fifteenth
day of the first month according to lunar calendar. Being celebrated on the
last day of the lunar New Year, Yuan Xiao Jie marks the return of light and
warm of the sun. Flashy red lanterns and firecrackers light the sky, while
spectators try to spot the first full moon of the year and welcome in the
spring. Children go out at night to temples carrying lanterns and solve riddles
on the lanterns. Traditionally, lanterns are made of bamboo and paper. Lanterns
can take on almost any shape and range in various size and color, but usually
red to symbolize good fortune. Because appreciating the lanterns offers a good
chance for young boys and girls to communicate with each other, the Lantern
Festival is also regarded as Chinese Valentine's Day
Hamy。 Another prominent festival celebrated by
Chinese in most parts of the world is called dong zhi/ Winter solstice.
Winter solstice festival (dongzhi) is celebrated around
21 or 22nd December every year. 冬
is winter 至
is arrival. Traditionally, Chinese believe that the arrival of winter signifies
the time for farmers to celebrate the harvest through reunion with their
families. During yuan xiao jie and dong zhi, or, any
occasions of family or relatives reunion such as Chinese wedding ceremony,
people eat glutinous rice balls named after the festival, yuan xiao (also known
as tang yuan) .Tang yuan
can be either small or large, and filled or unfilled. Yuanxiao is round in
shape so it is endowed with the meaning of reunion, harmony and happiness.
Hope everyone
can benefit from the sharings.
Hamy:
Hamy:
Hamy
Hamy:
